Under 12 QJC Southern Challenge - Grand Final v's Gold Coast Day 5 of the u12 QJC Gympie carnival started the same as all the others... up at 6am, first to breakfast, first to check out, first to the bus, first to the field as a team. Consistent warm-up drills and match day preparation before the game, with plenty of time to chat through game plan and strategy for the Grand Final.
The Gympie cricket establishment had produced some great pitches for the week, with the day 5 pitch holding up remarkably well, but there were a few areas that we expected to stay low or shoot off a length early in the game... so the toss was an important one to win. Tails never fails, but the skipper was sitting on 2 from 4, so when Charlie won the toss he was quick to send Gold Coast into bat. The Thunder were the only unbeaten team during the week and were a well disciplined and well coached side, with a clear mandate to accumulate runs in the first quarter and have wickets in the bank for the second 20 overs. MSW bowled tight lines for the most part, but a few too many wides/no balls relieved a bit of pressure at crucial moments. A couple of wickets prevented them from scoring too many on a difficult pitch, with the Thunder cautiously batting their way to 2-43 in the first 20 overs. MSW's opening pair saw the opening bowlers off, but a few quick wickets put some pressure back on us until the skipper Charlie McGrath and vice Beachy-Head steadied the ship against some efficient, tactical bowling with 6 or 7 fielders on the off side to restrict scoring opportunities. MSW survived a few scares to hit lunch at 4-41 off 20 overs, pretty much on par with the GC but with a couple more batters in the shed.
In the second quarter GC played with more freedom and upped the run rate. The only way MSW had to restrict their total was to bowl them out and bowl wicket to wicket on the 5th day pitch. All the bowlers contributed, with Eddie taking two as he forced his way into the contest as he has done all week.... then along came Jack with the spell of the tournament, bowling tight lines and great areas taking 6-11 in his 8 overs to help bowl GC out for 117. Although trailing by 77 runs, which was significantly more than we wanted to chase, this MSW team has some fighting spirit and set about this target with the same attitude they have played the whole carnival... with confidence and courage. Bailey finally falling for 22 runs with the score 5-71, still with plenty to do and the required run rate starting to creep up a little. But with our skipper still at the crease we always believed. In walked little Sid Dawson.... relieving the pressure with 3 quick boundaries taking us to the brink. MSW only had a couple wickets left in the shed and Charlie facing his last ball before he had to retire, smashed a four to bring up his fifty and take MSW to victory. A captain's knock if ever I have seen one.
A very special experience for a team that scrapped every day, delivered whenever the coach asked them to and worked as a team throughout. Well done MSW, awesome outcome! .
Congratulations to all players selected in this season upcoming representative carnivals.
